Hair Washing Basics

Are you washing your hair properly?

Something we do our whole lives, but how many of us do it properly?

Award winning hairdresser, Mary Geoghegan, breaks down the fundamentals of washing your hair properly, depending on your hair type.
Big Question: Do we need to shampoo our hair once or twice?

1. Hair types 1 & 2 e.g. straight and wavy hair
If you wash your hair everyday or every other day, one shampoo wash will be fine.
If you go for 3 days or more before washing your hair, you will need to shampoo your hair twice.
The first shampoo removes excess oil, product and environmental dirt. The second shampoo cleans your scalp removing any dead skin. Make sure you scrub your whole head thoroughly, if you miss an area, this can cause your scalp to itch, feel irritated & look flaky.
When Conditioning your hair you want to focus on the bottom half of your hair e.g. the mid lengths and ends (not your scalp).
The bottom half of your hair is older, has had more wear and tear, making it dryer and more fragile. Your roots are new hair that's exposed to natural oils quickly. If you put conditioner too close to your scalp it will make your hair feel and look greasy.
If you have long hair, while your conditioner is on, this is a perfect time to detangle your hair. Use a tangle teezer or wide tooth comb and ease your way through your hair, this will make combing your hair pre styling so much easier.

2. Hair textures 3 & 4 (curly, coiled, afro)
As you will know, it's much harder for your natural oils to slide down your hair through the kinks and coils, so you want to try and leave your hair longer between washes.
I’d recommended washing your hair once a week and then shampooing your hair twice.
You can apply conditioner over your whole head and right up to your roots, as you want to nourish all of your hair. Your hair will be thirsty, if it's not been saturated with product, that's when your hair is going to frizz.
My Top tip is to work through your hair in sections, to be confident all your hair is coated with the conditioner.
The same technique applies with styling products.

The Hottest Hair Trends of 2024

What's In and What's Out

As we stride confidently into 2024, the world of hair fashion is abuzz with innovative trends that promise to turn heads and make bold statements. From the resurgence of vintage styles to the embrace of futuristic aesthetics, this year is all about expressing individuality through unique and creative hair choices. Whether you're looking to update your look or simply stay in the loop, here's a comprehensive guide to the top hair trends of 2024.

1. Retro Revival: The 90s and 2000s Comeback

Nostalgia is a powerful force, and 2024 sees a significant resurgence of hairstyles from the 90s and early 2000s. Think sleek, high ponytails, crimped waves, and the iconic "Rachel" cut from *Friends*. These styles are being modernized with contemporary twists, such as adding vibrant colors or pairing them with undercuts for an edgy contrast.

2. The Shaggy Mullet: A New Classic

The mullet has been on the fringe of hair trends for a few years, but 2024 solidifies its place in mainstream fashion. This year’s mullet, however, is less about shock value and more about style and versatility. The shaggy mullet combines layers and texture, creating a look that's both edgy and chic. Celebrities and influencers are rocking this look with confidence, making it a go-to for those wanting a daring yet fashionable change.

3. Vivid Colours and Pastel Hues

Hair colour in 2024 is all about standing out. Vivid, bright shades like electric blue, neon pink, and emerald green are making a splash, especially among younger generations. Alongside these bold choices, softer pastel hues remain popular, offering a dreamy, whimsical alternative. Think lavender, mint green, and peach, which can be applied as full coverage, ombre, or subtle highlights.

4.The Wet Look: Sleek and Shiny

The wet look is back and more polished than ever. This trend involves creating a sleek, glossy appearance as if you’ve just stepped out of the shower. It’s a versatile style that can be worn with both short and long hair, and it's perfect for both casual and formal occasions. To achieve this look, use high-shine gels or serums, and comb through your hair to ensure a smooth finish.

5. Natural Textures and Curls

Embracing natural hair texture continues to be a major trend in 2024. More people are celebrating their curls, coils, and waves, opting for hairstyles that highlight their natural beauty. The key is to enhance and define your hair’s natural pattern using the right products and techniques. From voluminous afros to defined ringlets, natural hair is not just a trend but a movement towards self-acceptance and confidence.

6. Buzz Cuts and Bold Undercuts

For those who love low-maintenance and high-impact styles, buzz cuts and undercuts are the way to go. These styles are perfect for showcasing facial features and can be easily personalized with designs, colors, or patterns shaved into the hair. The buzz cut, in particular, is being embraced by all genders, symbolizing strength and individuality.

7. Braids and Twists

Braids and twists continue to evolve, offering endless possibilities for creativity. From intricate cornrows and box braids to simple three-strand braids and two-strand twists, these styles are perfect for protecting natural hair while looking stylish. 2024 sees an increase in combining braids with other elements, such as beads, cuffs, and colored extensions, adding a unique touch to traditional styles.

8. Bob with a Twist

The classic bob gets an update in 2024 with asymmetrical cuts, blunt ends, and playful textures. Whether it’s a sleek, straight bob or a wavy, tousled one, this versatile haircut is perfect for anyone looking to refresh their look without making drastic changes. Adding layers or opting for a choppy finish can give the bob a modern edge.

9. Accessory Overload

Hair accessories are making a strong comeback. From oversized scrunchies and statement headbands to jeweled pins and clips, accessorizing your hair is a fun way to add personality to your style. These accessories can transform even the simplest hairstyles into something special, making them a must-have for 2024.

Conclusion

2024 is shaping up to be a year of bold choices and creative expression in the world of hair fashion. Whether you’re looking to revive a retro style, experiment with vivid colors, or embrace your natural texture, there’s a trend for everyone. So go ahead and make a statement with your hair this year – after all, it's one of the best ways to express your unique personality and style.

Protecting Your Hair in the Sun

Essential Tips for Healthy Locks

As the summer sun blazes, we often think about protecting our skin from harmful UV rays. But what about our hair? Prolonged sun exposure can lead to dry, brittle, and damaged hair. To keep your locks luscious and healthy, it's crucial to adopt a hair care routine that shields your tresses from the sun’s harmful effects. Here’s your ultimate guide to protecting your hair in the sun.

1. Use UV Protection Products

Just like your skin, your hair needs sunscreen too. Look for hair care products that offer UV protection, such as leave-in conditioners, sprays, or serums formulated with UV filters. These products help create a protective barrier around your hair, preventing damage from prolonged sun exposure.

2. Wear a Hat or Scarf

One of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your hair from the sun is by wearing a hat or scarf. Not only does this provide a physical barrier against UV rays, but it also helps retain moisture in your hair and scalp. Opt for a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face, neck, and hair, or choose a stylish scarf that complements your outfit.

 3. Avoid Heat Styling

During the summer months, try to minimize the use of heat styling tools like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. These tools can further dehydrate your hair and cause additional damage. Embrace your natural texture or opt for heatless styling methods like braids, buns, or twists to keep your hair looking fabulous without the added heat.

4. Rinse Before and After Swimming

Whether you’re taking a dip in the pool or the ocean, it's important to rinse your hair with fresh water immediately before and after swimming.  Rinsing before stops your hair acting as a sponge to the chlorine and salt water. Chlorine from pools and salt from seawater can be very harsh on your hair, causing it to become dry and brittle. After final rinse, follow up with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to restore your hair’s natural balance.

5. Opt for Protective Hairstyles

Protective hairstyles like braids, buns, and twists not only look stylish but also help shield your hair from the sun. These styles keep your ends tucked away, reducing the risk of sun damage and tangling. Additionally, protective hairstyles can help retain moisture and prevent breakage.

6. Hydrate and Condition

Sun exposure can strip your hair of its natural moisture, leaving it dry and brittle. To combat this, keep your hair hydrated by using a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week. Look for products that contain hydrating ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, or aloe vera. Leave-in conditioners are also a great way to provide continuous moisture throughout the day.

Conclusion

Protecting your hair from the sun is essential for maintaining its health and beauty during the summer months. By incorporating these tips into your hair care routine, you can enjoy the sunshine without compromising the vitality of your locks. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your hair looking its best all summer long. So, grab your hat, spritz on that UV protection, and let your hair shine as brightly as the sun!
